STORIES THAT REACH NEW DEPTHS.
Celebrating 50 Years of NOAA

There is an upside to ignorance, and a downside to knowledge. Knowledge makes life messier. It makes it a bit more difficult for a person who wishes to shrink the world to a worldview.
― Michael Lewis, The Fifth Risk
Our name comes from the five bodies of water that contain 21% of the world's surface freshwater, but our vision spans the world's ocean and throughout the scientific community. While the Great Lakes is where and what we call home, our work has taken us to the islands of Hawai'i, the agricultural fields surrounding Monterey, to the wetlands of Mobile, Alabama - and that's just in the first part of 2019.
We go where data is dense, but public understanding is thin. Where innovation is taking shape, but where stakeholders who will benefit know little or nothing about the changes on the horizon. We love science. And we are passionate about communicating how it is shaping and reshaping our understanding of the planet and our place in the cosmos.
